The Abia State Government has alerted residents and the public to disregard a message circulating online claiming that people can receive ₦65,000 through a birthday cash transfer programme linked to Governor Alex Otti.
The government said the information is false and was created by fraudsters to deceive unsuspecting individuals. According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the message falsely claims that the cash transfer is part of activities marking Governor Otti’s 61st birthday and is being organised through the Otti Foundation.
The state government explained that neither Governor Otti, the Abia State Government, nor the Alex Otti Foundation has approved or launched any birthday giveaway, cash transfer programme, or payment scheme connected to the circulating message.
The Government also stated that the websites and links attached to the message are not affiliated with the Government or the foundation.
They described the platforms as fraudulent websites designed to obtain victims’ personal and financial details.
The government warned that people who provide sensitive information through such links could expose themselves to financial fraud, identity theft, and unauthorised access to their bank accounts or mobile money wallets.
It noted that fraudsters often use such tactics to obtain details such as bank information, BVN numbers, and one-time passwords.
Residents were therefore advised not to click on any of the links being shared or submit personal information through the websites.
The government also urged the public to avoid forwarding the message to others in order to prevent more people from falling victim to the scam.
It further reminded the public that all official announcements, programmes, and information from the Abia State Government are released only through its official website and verified social media platforms.
