The Abia State Government, in partnership with UN-Habitat, is set to produce the first master plan for Abia cities. The Abia city master plan is proposed for Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia.
The Director General of the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), Uche Ukeje, disclosed this during the Greater Aba Metropolitan Master Plan Final Validation workshop in Aba. He explained that the master plan has been handled by UN-Habitat and would be displayed publicly to gather people’s feedback.
“People are expected to make their inputs to the master plan now because after some months, every decision taken about the master plan and the development of Aba will no longer change because it will be frozen by law.
“We are going to make laws to back up the Aba master plan to prevent it from being abused by people in the future.”He Said. The master plan would be sent to the state house of assembly to get legal backing upon completion.
Master Plan Deliverables
The proposed Abia City master plan hopes to create more districts in the state while facilitating the relocation of the Ngwa Road (Ahia Ohuru) Market to the present site of the School of Health Technology. This is to create room for the expansion of Enyimba International Stadium.
Also proposed is the relocation of the School of Health to Obingwa Local Government Area, which was the government’s original plan. The proposed master plan would be Aba’s very first, since the city has never had a master plan.

During a special planning session at the UN-Habitat headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, Miss Jane Muriuki said the 25-year master plan, when implemented, will transform Aba into a global city. The master plan also has some climate considerations, which aim to turn Aba green with trees, given its high population density and hot weather.
Participants in the session shared their admiration for the initiative, praising the Abia state government and UN-Habitat for the plan.
