The Abia State Government has continued efforts to recover lands affected by the Obohia Borrow Pit project as Governor Alex Otti moves to return properties to their rightful owners.
The land recovery exercise is part of the administration’s plan to address complaints from residents whose houses, lands, and other properties were demolished during the creation of the borrow pit site.
Many affected residents had raised concerns over the loss of their properties, saying the project brought hardship and created fresh problems in the community.
The state government said the ongoing recovery process aims to address past issues. It also seeks to ensure that those who lost their property receive appropriate attention.
Governor Otti’s administration has maintained that restoring the rights of affected property owners remains a priority. He said efforts continue to address challenges associated with the Obohia Borrow Pit project.
The project represents yet another infrastructure initiative by the Otti administration, addressing a severely dilapidated sector in Abia State. Otti has spent a good portion of the state’s revenue on road infrastructure.
Road infrastructure was a major point of concern for Abia State for over 20 years under the Peoples Democratic Party. The state was synonymous with bad roads, poor environmental conditions, and shaky security.
All that was addressed under Otti, earning him strong political capital in the state and a growing National recognition. In addition to road infrastructure, the Otti administration is credited with completing the Geometric Power Project. The project is a 20-year Public-Private Partnership Project partly financed by the African Development Bank.
The banker-turned-Governor is gunning for reelection in 2027 under the banner of the Labour Party.
