The Abia State Government, through the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), has begun work on a long-term masterplan for Aba.
The agency brought together architects, civil engineers, and other professionals over the past weeks to design a full Development plan for the city.
The goal is to create a clear blueprint to guide Aba’s growth over the next 25 years, even beyond the current administration of Alex C. Otti.
The master plan is designed to become a legal framework once completed and approved. It will guide all future Development in the city, regardless of who is in government.
Key parts of the plan include industrial corridors. This is a defined banking zone, expansion areas for New Aba, and new strategies for managing flooding.
It also covers underground drainage systems, railway routes, and proper land use control across the city.
Officials said the plan will also work alongside the Land Use Act. This is to ensure proper regulation of land and building activities, especially around waterways and transport corridors.
Residents are advised to pay attention to ongoing public information shared through government channels. This includes documentary videos released on YouTube, to avoid buying land in areas designated for future infrastructure projects.
The government says the plan aims to prevent disorganized growth. It also hopes to ensure that Aba follows a structured Development path for decades to come. Last year, the Abia government signed an MOU with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The MOU was for the support of the Aba master plan project.
The twin cities of Aba and Umuahia are the two most important cities in Abia State. Aba is the commercial hub of the state, housing most of its commercial activities, while Umuahia is the administrative capital.
GADA is one of the developmental initiatives of the Otti administration. It focuses on urban planning, real estate, and the overall upscaling of the greater Aba area.
