Imo state students at the Nigerian Law School and indigene returnees from South Africa are set to share N300 million released by their governor amongst themselves.
Students of the Nigerian Law School from Imo State are set to receive N500,000 to mitigate the high cost of living. Returnees from South Africa who are Imo indigenes will receive N1 million each to help with their rehabilitation and reintegration.
The students number 100, while the returnees are about 250. The grant money from the governor totalled N300 million in all, a humongous amount to spend on charity.
Imo State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, disclosed this in a statement in Owerri.
Emelumba stated that the governor was moved to undertake the humanitarian gesture following the sordid conditions of the students and returnees.
” The law students made a passionate appeal to His Excellency to support them to cushion the global inflation as regards the cost of living. As a caring father, he responded promptly,” he explained.
For the returnees, Emelumba stated that Uzodimma felt empathy for the dislodged South African residents, hence his initiative to set aside a reintegration fund for them. He also pointed out that the initiative mirrors the shared prosperity agenda of the Uzodimma administration, which seeks to carry everyone along.
The Commissioner added that the Law students are long-time recipients of humanitarian gestures from the Uzodimma administration
“Most of them are on the scholarship list of the state government, and from time to time, the governor extends a helping hand to them,” he added.
