Winners of the just concluded Southeast Maths Olympiad will participate in the International STEM Olympiad Grand Finale slated to hold in Rome from July 2nd to 8th.
The winners, Egejurum Onyedikachi, Onwubiko Chimdiebube and Don-Anele Munachimso, will join the global STEM competition in Rome after winning the Primary, Junior and Senior categories of the Southeast Maths Olympiad back home.
The students will compete against 153 students from around the world in Rome, testing their knowledge and capacity in STEM fields.
” I’m confident that they will bring back the Gold medals from each category. We will shine on the world stage,” Alex Onyia, Convener of the Southeast Maths Olympiad, stated.
The education enthusiast revealed that the total cost of the trip for the three students, including flights, hotels, Tours and registration, is £32,200. Onyia will rely on donations from deep pockets in the region to fund the logistics of the competition in Rome.
The three students were the winners of a regional maths competition that featured 11,522 students from Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia and Ebonyi State. The Southeast Maths Olympiad aims to revitalise passion in mathematics amongst young students in the eastern region.
Onyia revealed that the competition will now be an annual event to achieve lasting impact and cultivate competition in the eastern region. Nathan Nwachukwu, Terra Industries Co-Founder, supported the maiden edition of the event with N15 million, the largest donation.
Nwachukwu’s Defence manufacturing company, Terra Industries, raised $33.8 million across two funding rounds. The Abuja-based manufacturing company aims to pioneer indigenous defence manufacturing in Africa, ending Africa’s dependence on foreign countries for military and surveillance hardware.
Imo state came out on top at the Southeast Maths Olympiad, winning the Primary and Senior Categories. Enugu State and Anambra State followed closely, with Abia State leaving much room for improvement.
