The Enugu chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has elected a new state executive to champion the party’s affairs in the state at a statewide Congress held at Okpara Square.
Barrister Peter Mbah, the state’s executive governor, and other key dignitaries in the state’s APC structure attended the event. Mbah described the Congress as a welcome event that markets Enugu State as a model for politics and governance.
” What we have done together shows that we are members of one big family. Enugu State is not just a model of governance; it is also a model for politics. The marriage we have formed is not one of convenience; it is a real marriage built on shared vision and purpose. ” Mbah said
” I congratulate Dr Martin Chukwunweike, Hon. Chukwudi Nnadozie, and the 35-member executive. The peaceful and credible exercise reflects our unity and maturity.” He added.
Mbah likened the state’s increased spending and bold initiatives to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership style. He stated his administration has empowered subnationals with funds and exposure. He said the Tinubu administration has made a smart decision to connect Enugu to the centre by joining the APC.
” By connecting to the centre, we have secured tangible gains, from the concessioning of our international airport and cargo terminal, to approval for the railway completion, the South East Development Commission, and the advancing gas pipeline that will unlock our energy potential,” Mbah explained.
Enugu is the latest southeastern state to join the APC bandwagon, following Imo and Ebonyi states. The state was predominantly PDP for years before Peter Mbah’s sharp switch last year.
Political analysts believe Peter Mbah’s decision was a personal one aimed at positioning himself for a higher political position after his tenure as Enugu Governor. Mbah pops up as one of the vice presidential hopefuls under a northern candidate by 2031.
Enugu, as a state, still awaits the much-acclaimed dividends from the centre following the governor’s decision to join the APC. The state congress and the election of EXCO members today highlight a growing APC structure in the state ahead of the general elections next year.
