Political enthusiasts in Nigeria are following the latest political moves and horse-trading happening in the country as former Anambra Governor Peter Obi officially joins the ADC.
Former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, officially welcomed Obi into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following his declaration in Enugu yesterday.
” Today marks a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country, with the official declaration of my brother and associate, Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).'” Atiku shared on X
” It is my pleasure to welcome him officially, as we look forward to a robust working relationship that will foster a virile opposition, one that will ultimately form a government capable of bringing prosperity and peace to our people, ” he added.
Peter Obi joins a league of national politicians disgruntled with the influence of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP. These politicians came together to form a national coalition to wrest power from the APC.
Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Aminu Tambuwal, Senator David Mark, Prof Pat Utomi, Rauf Aregbesola, and other politicians make up this coalition, which is charged with becoming the main opposition to the ruling party.
The Presidential Ticket Debate
Peter Obi’s alignment with the ADC has sparked speculations on who would man the party’s presidential ticket next year. Political heavyweights like Atiku Abubakar, Aminu Tambuwal, and Rotimi Amaechi pose a palpable challenge to Obi’s ticket.
However, many experts believe Peter Obi and Atiku could reach an agreement and run for the party, but the question of who will lead the ticket remains in the balance.
A similar situation occurred in PDP in 2023, and political experts see a repeat of the fallout between Atiku and Obi as 2027 draws near. The addition of Peter Obi to the ADC coalition strengthens their chances amid growing concerns about an impending internal crisis, fueled by the Obi-Atiku situation.
