The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has reacted to a statement released by the Imo state government on an alleged plan to sabotage the Imo state-owned electricity project by the regional power distributor.
In a signed statement by Emeka Ezeh, EEDC’s Group Head of Corporate Communications, the regional power distributor described the allegations by the Imo state government as baseless and completely false.
” EEDC wishes to state categorically that the allegation is baseless, unfounded, and completely devoid of truth. We thereby advise our esteemed customers in Imo state to disregard the claim in its entirety, as EEDC has no intention whatsoever to carry out any major power outages in the state.” Ezeh stated.
The EEDC accused the Imo state government of using propaganda to divert attention and mask its prolonged hostility towards the regional power distributor in the state. The statement by the EEDC reiterated two facts as a summary of its official reaction to the matter.
The EEDC stressed that there is no major plan to facilitate a mass power outage in Imo state, and the power distribution company is committed to serving its customers while making significant investments to increase power reliability and overall service quality in the state.
Concluding its statement, the EEDC warned that should there be any outage in the state, it would be orchestrated by the Imo state government.
The Imo state government, under the administration of Hope Uzodimma, is fronting an electricity project aimed at providing 24/7 electricity in the state. The “Light Up Imo” project by the Orashi Electricity Company Limited is part of the N756 billion budget for expanded economic opportunities.
The indigenous electricity company would be competing with the EEDC for customers and market share, and the growing tension between the two entities points towards an incoming rigorous business battle.
The Orashi Electricity Company Limited is a state-licensed entity partnering with Egyptian firm Madkour for generation, transmission, and distribution. The first phase of the “Light up Imo ” project targets Owerri metropolis, leveraging the 70% complete Egbema Power Plant for local power generation.
