The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance and the incumbent governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has been declared the winner of the Anambra Gubernatorial elections after polling 422,664 votes.
Soludo swept the polls, winning all 21 local governments in the state and securing at least 21% of the votes in all local government areas passing the vote spread needed to return to the Light House Awka.
The Apex electoral body in Nigeria, INEC, announced Soludo the Winner of the elections at the INEC headquarters in Awka, with the All Progressives Congress’s Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu finishing second with 99,445 votes and YPP’s Chukwuma finishing third with 37,753 votes.
Soludo clinched reelection with a vote difference of over 300k votes, a landslide victory by all ramifications. The victory marks the second time an APGA candidate has won all 21 local governments in the state.
Addressing the press in Awka, Soludo commended the INEC for conducting a peaceful and hitch-free election, while calling on other candidates to come together and work towards a new Anambra.
Soludo stated that leadership resumes tomorrow for him, as he never really stopped governing even during the campaign season.
Speaking further during his victory speech, Soludo confirmed the death of an APGA Chieftain, Nze Ala Kuru Orji, fatally shot by unknown gunmen in Owerre Ezukala in Orumba South. The Anambra governor regretted the incident and called on subsequent security outfits to get on top of the matter.
Soludo’s victory reinstated APGA’s dominance of Anambra politics as the party has now controlled the state for the past 20 years.
Notable absentee from the top 5 candidates in the Anambra Gubernatorial elections is the People’s Democratic Party, led by Jude Ezenwafor. The elections mark the first time the party, which was a former powerhouse in the state, has finished beneath the 5th place.
The Anambra gubernatorial elections were recorded as a win for the new INEC leadership under Prof Joash Amupitan. There were no records of glitches, and votes were fully uploaded to the Irev from the various polling booths.
