The Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, has flagged off the construction of a WIOCC/Abia fibre duct infrastructure project in the state in partnership with the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC) in a Public/Private arrangement.

Otti, during the groundbreaking ceremony in Aba town hall in Aba South Local Government, explained that the project is part of his technological exploits to expand broadband access, digital inclusion, and improve last-mile connectivity in Abia state.

“The flag-off of the Duct Infrastructure Development Project has been set up to highlight our commitment to the development of the state’s technology infrastructure outline, with the overarching objective being to run an interconnected underground duct system to support the deployment of reliable broadband technology, superior digital services, and expand the network of advantages for investors and new residents,” Otti explained

Speaking further, Otti commended the WIOCC for partnering with the state and helping it in its journey of digital transformation. He harped that the completion of the Duct Infrastructure Development Initiative will form the base for the accelerated and robust growth of the state’s digital economy, preparing Abia state for the global new age, which runs on high tech.

According to the Governor, the new technical infrastructure will play a key role in attracting businesses to the state, aligning with the Otti administration’s vision to create an enabling environment for innovation and investments.

Dr Ayotunde Coker, Chief Executive Officer of Open Access Data Centres (a WIOCC subsidiary), reacting to the groundbreaking event, said that the project is key in bridging the digital divide and advancing the national broadband goals.

“The groundbreaking event symbolises the beginning of a long-term investment in Abia State’s digital future, one that will improve access to data services, support smart city development, and contribute to a more inclusive digital economy,” Coker said.

The WIOCC representative stated that the construction of the fibre duct will provide faster, more reliable connectivity that empowers communities, fuels entrepreneurship, and strengthens the state’s economic growth.
