President Bola Tinubu has approved the construction of two flyovers in Awka, the Anambra State capital, to ease traffic and improve road safety.
Anambra State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, announced the approval at a press briefing in Awka. The flyovers will be at Regina Caeli Junction and at the second gate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (Unizik). He said the approval followed Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s appeal to the president over road safety and traffic concerns at both locations.
Why These Locations
Both sites lie on the busy Awka–Enugu expressway. Regina Caeli Junction has been the scene of recurring fatal road crashes, and for years residents called for a crossing there.
Pedestrians have had to risk crossing the busy road or walk to the Unizik Junction pedestrian bridge, which is a considerable distance away.
Part of a Wider Federal Push
Ezeobi says the Tinubu administration has spent more than ₦300 billion on Anambra roads in less than four years. He also pointed to the Nkwelle Ezunaka bypass linking the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway to the Second Niger Bridge.
Awka is the capital city of Anambra and houses its administrative and Leisure hotspots. The city also houses state and federal universities as well.
