The Anambra State Government is projecting to hit N75 billion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in 2026 by expanding its Tax strategy, boosting electronic payment systems, and plugging revenue leakages.
The Southeastern state recorded an IGR of N47 billion in 2025 and is looking to improve that by 59.57% this year.
Nnaemeka Okonkwo, Chairman of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS), announced this last week while addressing the Public Accounts Committee of the Anambra State House of Assembly during the verification of the state’s 2025 audited government accounts.
The AIRS is tasked with leading the state’s revenue generation strategy, and Anambra State, being a commercially viable state, presents the body with many opportunities. The state under Soludo has enjoyed a little bit of sound fiscal management, given the governor’s experience in the field.
In April, the Debt Management Office revealed that Anambra State reduced its domestic debt by 60% in one fiscal year. The year in question is 2024 to 2025, and Anambra sits at the top of the national index for the highest reduction in the country.
Anambra clinched the top spot with a 59.73% reduction, the highest in the southeast and the rest of the country. Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi States followed closely, with reduction rates of 33.61%, 26.74%, and 25.58%, respectively.
Despite sound financial management, the Soludo administration has been criticised for delivering substandard projects, with some of the newly built roads already in bad shape.
Other capital projects like the Solution Funcity and the Ikenga City Mall represent bold bets in retail and leisure as the Anambra society opens up to new ways of life.
