The Federal Government is continuing efforts to improve and expand the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu as part of plans to strengthen aviation services in the South-East region.
The airport, which is managed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), serves as a major gateway for Enugu State and neighbouring states.
It currently operates a single main terminal that handles both arriving and departing passengers. Domestic flights remain the busiest operations at the airport. It consists of routes connecting Enugu to major cities such as Abuja and Lagos.
Although the facility holds international airport status, international flight operations are still limited. The airport has a 3,000-metre asphalt runway capable of handling medium and large aircraft under appropriate operating conditions.
Historical aviation records indicate that the airport handles an estimated 350,000 to 500,000 passengers annually.
Authorities have continued discussions and engagements aimed at modernising the airport’s infrastructure.
The planned improvements focus on expanding terminal facilities, improving passenger processing systems, and boosting operational efficiency.
The expansion efforts are expected to increase the airport’s capacity, improve passenger experience, and strengthen air connectivity across the Southeast.
Officials said the upgrades will also support economic growth, commercial activities, and broader aviation development in the region. The ongoing plans form part of wider federal initiatives. They are targeted at improving transport infrastructure and enhancing air travel services across Nigeria.
A federal government delegate under the Renewed Hope Agenda paid a visit to Enugu state. This is part of its National Media Tour. This is ahead of the general presidential elections in 2027, in which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains a frontrunner.
The renewed hope National Media tour started in the southeast with Ebonyi State as the first stop. Other states in line include Imo State, Enugu State, and Anambra State. The renewed hope is an APC fringe organisation. It is made up of members of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
