The Enugu State Government has warned market leaders against shutting down markets in the state capital for a planned political rally in support of Governor Peter Mbah and President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.
The government issued the warning on Friday in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo.
According to the statement, reports had emerged that some market leaders were planning to close major markets in Enugu East Senatorial District on Saturday to show support for the rally.
The state government said it does not support any move that would stop traders and residents from carrying out their daily business activities. It explained that such action runs counter to the administration’s efforts to promote business growth, attract investment, and improve productivity across the state.
The government also noted that one of its major decisions after taking office was ending the illegal Monday sit-at-home order on June 5, 2023, to ensure that economic activities continued without disruption.
While appreciating the support being shown to the governor and the president, the government maintained that participation in political activities should remain a personal choice. It said no individual or group should be forced to attend rallies or prevented from accessing markets and other public places where they earn a living.
The statement added that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of association and assembly, and that these rights should not be exercised in a way that affects others’ rights to conduct their businesses.
The government urged market leaders and members of the public to take note of its position, warning that sanctions would be imposed on anyone found to be closing markets or disrupting business activities due to political events.
