The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, Dr. Kelechi Anosike, has promised to move the seat of government back to Umuahia if elected governor.
Anosike said it was wrong for state affairs to be conducted from a governor’s private residence rather than the official Government House. According to him, the Abia State Government has been operating from the governor’s residence in Isiala Ngwa for the past three years, a situation he described as disturbing.
He stated that many residents of the state had raised concerns about the arrangement, adding that even President Bola Tinubu had reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over the Development.
The PDP candidate said government activities should be carried out from a proper Government House, not from a personal residence. He argued that the seat of government belongs in Umuahia, the state capital, where official state business should be conducted.
Anosike further said that returning the Government House to Umuahia would help improve openness in governance. He said it will also strengthen accountability and show respect for the people of Abia State.
He pledged that restoring the Government House to its rightful location would be one of his priorities. This is if he is given the opportunity to lead the state. Anosike runs under the banner of a depleted PDP in Abia state. He hopes to upset Alex Otti in the polls.
The PDP once controlled the Abia State platform, with politicians like Okezie Ikpeazu, Orji Uzor Kalu, and Theodore Orji. The party has been eclipsed by the Labour Party. This follows the defeat of Okezie Ikpeazu at the polls by Dr Alex Otti.
APC Abia State is currently led by Honourable Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. The party is fielding a logistics businessman, Eric Opah, in 2027. He is the main flag-bearer for the 2027 gubernatorial election in the state.
