The management of the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Parklane, has said the administration of Governor Peter Mbah is carrying out major reforms and expansion projects aimed at turning the hospital into the leading tertiary healthcare institution in Enugu State.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Bethrand Ngwu, disclosed this during a media briefing on Monday, providing updates on ongoing developments in infrastructure, medical training, specialist education, and healthcare services at the facility.
Ngwu said the transformation taking place at the hospital is part of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s plan to improve healthcare delivery across the state.
According to him, the governor believes that the well-being of citizens is important to the growth and development of any society.
He explained that shortly after assuming office in May 2023, Mbah visited the hospital and identified gaps in infrastructure and the need for expansion to meet increasing patient demand and training requirements.
Following the visit, the state government approved the construction of a modern Triage. It also approved an Emergency Unit, which was completed within four months.
The project was later followed by the approval of two major buildings. It consists of a twin six-story medical complex and a seven-story nursing and training facility. Both of which are nearing completion.
Ngwu stated that the six-story complex was initially planned as a diagnostic laboratory. Its building was later redesigned into a larger medical services center.
The facility now contains advanced laboratories, operating theatres, and intensive care units. It also contains recovery wards, radiology sections, and other specialized units needed for tertiary healthcare services.
He added that the development has also improved the hospital’s academic standing. It has also contributed to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria’s approval of an expanded admission quota of 350 students.
According to the CMD, more than 90 percent of the construction work on the complex has been completed. What is left is only finishing work and equipment installation.
He also described the seven-story Nursing Complex as a major part of the hospital’s long-term plan. The goal is to combine healthcare delivery with advanced medical education.
The building includes lecture halls, offices, conference rooms, student accommodation, and other learning facilities designed to support medical training.
Ngwu further revealed that the MRI and CT scan machines originally purchased for the Government House Clinic were redirected to ESUTH. This is to ensure that members of the public have access to the equipment.
He said the decision allows more residents to benefit from advanced diagnostic services. It also supports the hospital’s goal of providing quality healthcare and medical training.
Enugu already enjoys some medical tourism before this project, with top-notch health institutions like the Niger Foundation. The completion of the Esut hospital complex enhances basic healthcare in the state. It also elevates it to a standard above that of other states in the southeast region.
