The electricity distribution company, Aba Power, a subsidiary of Geometric Power, has informed customers that the current power interruption across its network is temporary.
The company, in a statement signed by its management, said the outage is linked to emergency maintenance work being carried out by gas suppliers to its main electricity provider, Geometric Power Aba Limited.
The company explained that the maintenance has disrupted gas supply, which in turn has affected turbine operations. This has led to the outage currently affecting customers in its service areas.
Aba Power said it is working with relevant partners to restore normal electricity supply as soon as possible.
It also noted that discussions are ongoing with the National Independent System Operator regarding its planned connection to the national grid. This is part of efforts to improve long-term power stability.
According to the update, the interruption is temporary, and normal electricity distribution will resume. This is once the maintenance work is completed and system operations stabilize.
The power firm assured customers that it understands the inconvenience caused by the situation. It stated that it appreciates their patience as efforts are underway to resolve the issue.
Geometric Power Aba Limited, the primary power provider linked to the supply chain, is also involved in managing the technical impact of the gas supply disruption affecting generation.
The Affected Ring Fenced Area
After its installation and launch, Geometric Power, in partnership with the Aba Power, provides constant electricity to the ring-fenced” area. This is under the purview of Geometric Power Limited. It is operated through its distribution subsidiary, Aba Power Ltd/APLE.
The ring-fenced area spans over 4,000 square kilometers. It covers only 9 of the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Abia State. This area is collectively known as the Aba Ring-Fenced Area.
Local Governments in Abia State in the ring-fenced area include Ukwa West, Aba North, Aba South, Osisioma Ngwa, Obingwa, Ugwunagbo, Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South, and Ukwa East
The geometric power plant is the result of a Public-Private Partnership. It was facilitated by the African Development Bank (AFDB) and other financial institutions. The over 20-year project was completed under the Tinubu Administration and has revamped Abia State’s electricity sector.
