The wife of the Abia State Governor and Abia first lady, Mrs Priscilla Otti, has handed over 35 newly built three-bedroom bungalows to widows across the 17 local government areas of the state under her Dignity Homes Initiative.
The houses were fully furnished and made ready for immediate occupation by the beneficiaries. The project aims to help vulnerable women by providing them with safe, comfortable homes.
The initiative is also expected to bring relief and stability to widows facing financial difficulties and housing challenges across the state.
Beyond the housing support, plans have also been made to introduce economic empowerment programmes for indigent women to help them become financially independent and improve their living conditions.
The project forms part of ongoing efforts by the Abia State Government and the First Lady’s office. The goal is to support less privileged residents and improve their welfare across the state. Abia State’s real estate market is saturated as the state witnesses an influx of immigrants.
The influx is driven by a favourable government. The Otti administration has reversed most of the major challenges Abia State faced for decades. Areas for key improvement include road infrastructure, Environmental sanitation, foreign direct investment, partnerships, and youth-centred initiatives.
The Abia Tech Cohort and Abia Leadership Academy were designed to uplift the state’s youth. Both programs are also meant to help them prepare for the global market. The Otti administration has also constructed 414 roads in Abia State, with over 1,000 km completed or under construction.
The Role of the First Lady’s Office in Nigeria
The office of the First Lady is a conduit for women’s affairs. It leverages state funds to launch women’s development initiatives. This is the setup in most Nigerian States. The Office of the First Lady is ceremonial and not functional. Funds are often disbursed as grants and handouts rather than through official channels.
The office of the first lady of Nigeria oversees other state-level offices. Its occupants often come together to advance women’s interests at the national level.
