The Enugu government, under the stewardship of the Peter Mba administration, reacted to a viral video showing a structural defect on one of the newly built schools under the Peter Mba Smart Green School Initiative.
The Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, Dan Nwomeh, reacted to the development with an official statement, assuring Enugu people of the structural integrity and overall quality of Smart Schools. Nwomeh released the statement on his X page detailing the full government response to the viral video, which showed one of the newly smart schools with a cracked wall.
The Enugu State Government is aware of a video currently making the rounds on social media showing structural defects, including cracked walls, at one of the Smart Green School construction sites in the state. We wish to assure the good people of Enugu State and the general public that the said defects had already been identified through our internal monitoring systems well before the video surfaced on social media.
The state government promptly terminated the contract and disengaged the contractor responsible for the substandard execution. The affected site was also flagged and scheduled for full remediation to meet the high structural and safety standards that the Governor Peter Mbah administration has committed to uphold. The Special Assistant reiterated that the Mbah administration maintains a zero tolerance policy to substandard works and wouldn’t hesitate to disengage any contractor that doesn’t perform up to standard. He maintained that the safety of students and teachers is of utmost priority, and the Enugu government is not ready to compromise on its standards.
Preventive Measures
Nwomeh revealed that the Enugu government has put in place some preventive measures to enforce the construction of quality school structures and to penalize defaulters who don’t comply. The administration initiated a three-tiered quality control and monitoring mechanism to supervise the construction of the 260 smart schools in the state.

Local Government Engineers, who serve as the first line of supervision, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, which conducts technical oversight and quality assurance, and the Governor’s Delivery Unit under the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, which provides high-level, independent verification of every project milestone.
This multi-layered approach ensures that no structural flaw goes undetected and that corrective actions are taken swiftly and without compromise.The Statement added
The official statement pleaded that the smart school with a structural defect is an isolated event, which is bound to happen in a mega project featuring over 1500 structures.
