The Imo State Police Command has commenced a Stakeholders Security Summit aimed towards improving the security situation in New Owerri through partnerships and Proactive measures.

The stakeholders’ Security Summit, themed “Proactive Policing And Community Partnership: The Pathway To Securing New Owerri,” will take place at the New Owerri Divisional Police Headquarters today, March 3, 2026.

CSP Safiyanu Usman Gwarzo, Divisional Police Officer, New Owerri Division, is the Chief Host of the event. Other top dignitaries, including the top brass of the Owerri Police Command, are in attendance.

The Summit is a public discourse initiative discussing ideas and strategies to secure lives and property in New Owerri. Proactive measures and partnerships with key community stakeholders are the summit’s big idea. The speakers will explore how best to maximise them to improve security.

Imo State’s Push for Increased Security Amidst Historical Crisis

Imo is at the dawn of a new security leadership following the coming to office of a new Commissioner of Police. The new CP Audu Garba Bosso, psc(+), recently paid a courtesy visit to traditional rulers in the State. He claimed the visit is to foster partnership and effective collaboration between both entities.

The security situation in Imo state has vastly improved following an infamous crisis in the state from 2022 to 2025. Activities of armed non-state actors described as “Unknown Gunmen” destabilised parts of the state for years. This prompted military presence along federal roads linking Onitsha to Owerri.

Improved Security in the state was evident in a smooth Yuletide celebration last year. There was no recorded security crisis throughout the state.

The Hope Uzodimma administration boosted local security by launching a state backed Vigilantee initiative. The aim is to complement the efforts of the police and the military. Imo state is positioned to become the economic nerve centre of the eastern region, given its centralised location.

A robust security framework is needed to make this a reality, hence the efforts of the current administration.
