The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has threatened an economic shutdown and unrest over its leader, Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention by the Department of State Security.
Mazi Chinasa Nworu, IPOB media strategist and leader of Family Writers Press, made the call in the latest Radio Biafra Broadcast, the body’s only major means of mass communication, claiming that IPOB has its sources and is well aware of the forces behind Kanu’s continued detention.
” If the Southeast governors do not want another economic shutdown and more, then they should know that if anything happens to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, we will make a decision that will shake everywhere,” Nworu said.
Nworu threatened a massive economic shutdown capable of grounding the economy and inviting a third-party country to settle the dispute it has with the Nigerian state.
” We have our intelligence. We know those who don’t want the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. We know our strength and powers, and when the time is ripe, we will unleash them on many of you.” Nworu added.
Nnamdi Kanu, in his last court appearance, at the Federal High Court in Abuja, had a heated exchange with the judge, doubting his knowledge of the law. He asked the judge to explain the constitutional basis of the law on which he is being tried for refusing to open his defence.
The judge ruled out the absence of a fair hearing in the case since Nnamdi Kanu was given a six-day window period to open his defence, which he failed to do. The Judge in charge of the matter for the day adjourned the case, setting November 20 as the next court date and the day for judgment.
Nnamdi Kanu was kidnapped in Kenya after being lured to the East African country by a separatist group. He was extradited to Nigeria by the Muhammadu Buhari administration and has remained in detention since 2021.
Kanu faces terrorism charges for founding a separatist group in a trial largely perceived as politically motivated and high-handed.
