Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has unveiled the newly revamped Nigergas Company Limited after over three decades of dormancy.
Mbah, during the unveiling ceremony, reeled out the economic impact of the company in terms of Job creation and stimulation of the local economy. He said the Nigergas company will create 100 jobs for skilled and semi-skilled workers and about 5000 indirect jobs across distribution, Fabrication, transportation, and the wider Supply Chain.
“What we revived today is not merely steel and pipes, but the restoration of purpose, dignity, and productivity to a site that once symbolized Eastern Nigeria’s industrial promise,” Mbah said, speaking at the event.
The Governor drew parallels between the revamping of the 30-year dormant NigerGas Company and his mission to raise Enugu’s GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion. He reiterated that Enugu can build a diversified, self-reliant economy if it chooses to do things differently with boldness and conviction.
Speaking further, Mbah stated that his administration approved a comprehensive rehabilitation model and a management model that combines public ownership with Private Sector performance discipline.
The newly revamped plant has resumed operation with new modern equipment and technology. It now produces 100 cubic metres of oxygen per hour and 45 cubic metres of acetylene per hour. Nitrogen, argon gas, carbon dioxide, and CNG stations are slated to come on board with time.
The Plant serves the medical and mechanical industries through the steady supply of medical Oxygen and industrial gas for welders, Agro processors, and manufacturers in the state.
Governor Mbah extended his gratitude to the Managing Director of the Enugu State Investment Authority and the Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Industry, Dr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo, for his role in the revamping process.
He also thanked the management of Ten Gas Development Limited, the engineering firm that oversaw the technical aspect of the revamping process.
Finally, he thanked the people of Emene for their support in the process of reviving the moribund gas plant.
Nigergas Company Limited in Enugu was established in 1962 by Dr. Michael Okpara, the former Premier of the Eastern Region, in partnership with the Italian firm Siad Machine Impianti
