The gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party in Anambra State, George Moghalu, called for the disbandment of the controversial Agunaechemba security outfit following a disturbing incident with a NYSC member in Oba.
Moghalu made the call in a Facebook live press conference, expressing his sadness over the incident and describing it as a scandalous embarrassment to the good people of Anambra state. He reiterated that the offence is unacceptable and such treatment should never have happened, regardless of the lady’s offence.
“Gentlemen of the press, this is devoid of politics; this is gross irresponsibility, and I stand on my position that Agunaechemba should be disbanded and trained before you can constitute them to a security outfit,” Moghalu told newsmen yesterday.
The Nigerian social media space was enraged by a viral video of members of the Agunaechemba security outfit molesting a young female corper in a hostel lodge in Oba, Anambra State.
The video sparked outrage, raising public scrutiny on the conduct and long-term viability of such state-sponsored security outfits.
Dr Law Mefor, Anambra’s commissioner for information, reacted to the incident, condemning the conduct of the security members. He informed the public that the Anambra government had taken action on the matter a long time ago, claiming that the incident occurred in July.
Agunaechemba on Trial
The Agunaechemba security outfit is a state-backed vigilante group formed by the Soludo administration to combat rising cases of robberies, kidnapping, and insecurity in Anambra state. The group has come under intense scrutiny recently for its unprofessional conduct, extortion habits, and extrajudicial killings.
The viral video making the rounds showed members of the vigilante group molesting a female NYSC member in Oba, Anambra State, to the shock and dismay of many. The incident attracted calls for disbandment and mental evaluation for members of the security outfit, with George Moghalu leading the call.
Moghalu is running for the position of Governor under the Labour Party in Anambra State. He enjoys the support of the political maverick, Peter Obi, and recently inaugurated his campaign council in Awka.
